Course Outline:

With this hands-on practical training you will practice the routine tasks of labelling, document creation, vehicle marking and more. This is an in-depth two-day study which addresses all of the duties routinely involved in UK and European road transport.

Who should attend:

All those involved in the routines of radioactive material consignment and transport for the power, defence and radiopharmaceuticals industries, University staff, Health Service professionals, Industrial Radiographers, non-destructive testing personnel.

Purpose:

To provide the skills required to successfully perform the routine tasks associated with radioactive material consignment and transport by road in the UK and Europe.

Basic study text:

2019 ADR Agreement, GB Carriage of Dangerous Goods Regulations.

Attainment level:

Proven ability to meet the function-specific training requirements and to operate the day-to-day control and judgement systems of the road transport regulations for the UK and Europe.

Test method:

Two hour written examination covering all aspects of routine radioactive material consignment and transport by road in the UK and Europe, at the close of the training course.

Certification:

Road Consignment & Transport Basic Skills.

Course entry requirement:

Level 1 test pass or equivalent level of knowledge and experience.

Study topics:

  • The legal authority of the regulatory texts
  • How the ADR Agreement and CDG Regulatory texts work
  • General background: authorisations, radiation protection, assurance programmes
  • Classification: regulatory thresholds, LSA, SCO, special form, contamination, categories, Exclusive Use; TI calculations, CSI,  A1/A2 limits
  • Identification of RAM: selection of proper shipping names and UN numbers
  • Packaging: general requirements, criteria for selection & performance, certification
  • Marks, labels, placards: package marking, category choice, label completion, vehicle plates/placards
  • Transport documentation: nature/detail of entries, carrier information, tremcards, authorisations
  • Contingency plans: scope of plans, notification requirements, inspections
  • Assurance systems: requirements of quality/compliance assurance schemes
  • Protection: general duties, high consequence dangerous goods, Nuclear Industries Security Regulations
  • DGSA: requirements, qualifications and duties
  • Driver licensing: need for VTC, means of qualification, carriage of documents
  • Transport: vehicles, equipment, loading, segregation, activity limits, contamination, crew duties, parking, tunnels.
