Course Outline:

With this hands-on practical training you will become familiar with the operational system of the IATA Dangerous Goods Regulations. You will identify the elements of operational duties that are the same as those for road transport, then study and practice the routine tasks that are unique to consignment of radioactive material by air. This is an in-depth one-day supplementary study which addresses all of the duties routinely involved in UK and global air transport.

Who should attend:

All those involved in the routines of radioactive material consignment and transport for the power, defence and radiopharmaceuticals industries, University staff, Health Service professionals, Industrial Radiographers, non-destructive testing personnel.

Purpose:

To provide the skills required to successfully perform the routine tasks associated with radioactive material consignment and transport by air in the UK and around the globe.

Basic study text:

2019 IATA Dangerous Goods Regulations, GB Air Navigation (Dangerous Goods) Regulations 2002.

Attainment level:

Proven ability to meet the function-specific training requirements and to operate the day-to-day control and judgement systems of the air transport regulations for the UK and around the globe to the satisfaction of the GB Department for Transport and the UK Civil Aviation Authority.

Test method:

Two hour written examination covering all aspects of routine radioactive material consignment and transport by air nationally and internationally, at the close of the training course.

Certification:

Air Consignment Basic Skills.

Course entry requirement:

Level 1 test pass or equivalent level of knowledge and experience plus Level 2 Road Consignment and Transport examination pass.

Study topics:

  • The legal authority of the regulatory texts
  • How the IATA DGRs and UK AN(DG) Regulations work: structure, scope, state/operator variations, forbiddens, SPs, emergency systems
  • Location of IATA operating systems fully aligned with other modal controls: classification, identification, packaging
  • IATA systems which vary from those in other modal controls: marks & labels, documentation, operator duties, activity limits.
